Automata is the plural for an Automaton: a self-operating machine designed to automatically follow a predetermined sequence of operations, or respond to predetermined instruction. During this session, we will explore how Automata are the first step in high tech, mechanical device creation. Then, we'll tap into your inner engineer. With a basic understanding of what is involved, you will create your own Automaton out of provided everyday type materials and experience the science of a controlled system.

Brian Calaway, an “instigator of imagination,” uses his “edu-preneurial” endeavors teaching creative engineering at various school venues. As a former high school science teacher, Brian continues to share his love of all the sciences. Brian's Vex Robotics team took the AZ championship three years in a row. Using Odyssey of the Mind, a creative problem solving program, as the driving force, Brian coaches teams to the World Finals level where they build strong structures, create unusual vehicles, and learn presentation skills. When Brian is not turning students on to making stuff, he can be found in his own maker space innovating contraptions made from “obtainium.” His current interests include Sterling Engines, devices and mechanisms, and he spends time in pursuit of hacking the next Ingress portal. He currently serves as the director of Odyssey of the Mind After School
Please note that all presentations will be recorded and you must sign a photo release at the venue to attend. If you like, you can download and sign a photo release in advance.
